Biography

Joan Dwiartanto is a multifaceted artist who continues to grow as a dancer, photographer, and filmmaker. She is 2022 graduate of The Juilliard School’s Dance Division, where performed works by choreographers such as Aszure Barton, Ohad Naharin, Justin Peck, Or Schraiber, and Bobbi Jene Smith.

While at Juilliard, her passion for filmmaking and choreography blossomed. In 2020, she co-directed a collaborative film for The Park Avenue Armory’s 100 Years | 100 Women event in New York City. In 2021, she worked as creative videographer and editor for Marilyn’s Funeral, a ballet film by American Ballet Theatre principal dancer James Whiteside. Dwiartanto then went on to direct and produce her own dance film, Crying On The Island They Own, which premiered in early 2022 and has since received twelve official selections to various film festivals around the world and multiple awards including winning BEST FILM in the Saint Petersburg International Film Festival 2022, and the Grand Jury Bluebonnet award in the Austin Dance Film festival 2022.

After graduating Juilliard, she joined YYDC under the direction of Yue Yin, performing in and touring Yin’s evening-length works NOWHERE (2023) and SOMEWHERE (2024), and will appear in the final installment of the trilogy, ELSEWHERE, premiering at 92NY in fall 2025. In addition to her work with YYDC, Dwiartanto has worked with various other companies in and out of New York City, including working as a ‘Swing’ dancer for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in their 2024–25 season, and now guesting with the Gibney company to perform Johan Inger’s Bliss in the fall. She has also recently been selected as the Gold Standard Arts Foundation Commission Dreamer awardee and is looking forward to continuing her growth as an artist in dance and film.
